The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis was founded in 1859 by Henry Shaw. Today, the Garden is a National Historic Landmark and a center for science, conservation, research, education, and horticultural display. The Garden family includes the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield and Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit. Programs impact our local community as well as partnerships around the globe.
Sustainability and conservation are at the core of our mission, including the "green living" activities of the Garden's EarthWays Center. With our historic landscapes, diverse horticulture, program breadth, and global conservation work, we are widely considered one of the top botanical gardens in the world.
The EarthWays Center of the Garden is devoted to an increasingly vital goal: conservation of energy and other natural resources for the future-also known as "sustainability"-meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. EarthWays Center staff work directly with audiences including Garden visitors, K-12 educators and students, college and university students, and community educators. We also work with green building professionals, auditors, contractors, businesses, and local municipality leaders with the goal of improving the built environment.
