Today, more than 16 percent of St. Louis County students receive special education services. Special education is costly; having a disability is expensive. As a result, additional resources are necessary to provide for the students' many needs. To meet these needs, the Foundation steps in to provide support in critical areas that go beyond the walls of the classroom. Our programs enhance student success and pave the road to their ultimate goal of independence.
Arts and music programs for children and youth with disabilities provide enhanced self-esteem, increased social interaction, improved language skills and greater awareness of the arts. Students often uncover a skill or talent through the SEF Arts in the Classroom Program. Each year, the Foundation provides several opportunities to students served by the Special School District but we need your support to help us bring more performances to more students.
The Foundation relies solely on private donations for support. The Foundation also helps students through:
Scholarships for college-bound students
Sending kids to camp by bridging the education gaps during summer, winter, and spring breaks
Hearing aids for children who are deaf and hard of hearing
Specialized equipment for children with physical disabilities
Grants to teachers for innovative classroom projects
Leadership program for high school students that show leadership potential
Support special projects identified by the principals of Special School District schools
