From Sarah Holaday, Director of Animal Care & Conservation:
As the trees bloom and the songbirds make their presence known out my windows, I’m reminded of the hope and new beginnings of the season. And a quote that seems fitting, "There are always flowers for those who want to see them." - Henri Matisse
Within the Mexican wolf recovery program, each spring, I see more “flowers” blooming with the birth of pups.
Last year, our residents Nashoba and Max contributed six pups to the wild population. And this January, the annual Mexican wolf population survey reported a 9th-year increase, with at least 286 roaming free in the wilds of New Mexico and Arizona.
We’re humbled to have been there from the start, when extinction loomed and hope ran scarce. We’re grateful that our founders brought the last seven Mexican wolves into their care and persisted in their unwavering commitment to these underdogs.
Since then, a passionate core group of individuals has been cheering on this endangered species. On tours, during volunteer shifts, and with your generous donations, you’ve helped turn the tide for Mexican wolves.
While they’re still considered critically endangered, their resilience is made possible by our working together. So we remain hopeful, look for the flowers, and put action behind that optimism to make real change for wolves.
Help us kick off our Spring Fundraiser, Hope in Bloom, on Give STL Day!
Your support directly helps us rewild pups this spring, care for our 17 Mexican wolves, and continue to help restore ecosystems that so desperately need the balance that wolves provide.
